McNealy to Ellison: How to duck death by open source • The Register http://reg.cx/1LW9 Interview Let's forget the last few years ever happened — the last five, at least. Possibly 10. In the 1980s Sun Microsystems was on fire. Good story from The Reg, talking to Scott McNealy about where Sun went wrong and what strategies Oracle should pursue to be successful. Mostly about what went wrong though. Scott places a lot of blame on the decision to drop Solaris x86. I remember when Solaris x86 disappeared... just vanished off the face of the company. This helped allow Linux to gain ground -quickly- in the low end *nix server market. It was really like upper management (Scott says not him) was just sticking their heads in the ground (or somewhere else) regarding the threat Linux was obviously becoming. They just chose not to acknowledge it.

Man tonight's Giants game was all kinds of awesome. The guy who tried to steal a bag on the Giants when the Dogs had a 6 run lead got hit (finally). The Dogs bench coach got tossed arguing an inside pitch, after the benches had been warned. Torre got tossed after Rowand got hit (again). Remember, the Dodgers broke his face last season. Then the coup de grâce, Bochy got the Dogs closer removed from the game by the Umps when acting manager Don Mattingly made two trips to the mound in one! (He stepped off the mound, then returned). Bochy saw it, told the umps, and got Broxton removed, to a shower of boos from the Dodgers fans. Andres Torres then promptly delivered a 2 run double to put the good guys up by 1. Awesome. MLB Rule 8.06 (d): A manager or coach is considered to have concluded his visit to the mound when he leaves the 18-foot circle surrounding the pitcher’s rubber.

Chat with Scott from Fortune. Favorite quote: "Apple is beyond proprietary..." That's the problem I've always had with Apple. In the old days those things (IIgs, quadra, etc) were hermetically sealed. I couldn't open it up and see what was inside. So I built a PC instead... For all the beer...I wouldn't say it was shocking that Jonathan left Oracle quickly. I think James leaving is a little more "telling" or "disturbing"...Thanks for bringing the beer busts back, James! This would, perhaps, be the second most shocking/sad newsafter the resignation of Jonathan (former Sun CEO). I?m sad and upset after hearing the confirmed news that James Gosling will be leaving Sun/Oracle. "Father of Java" Resigns from Sun/Oracle
